I’m knee-deep in the development of the Burden comic book – a key project for 2025. It involves tons of research, planning, editing, and a whole lot more. However, I find that making at least a little space for practice rooted in fun and curiosity is a necessary part of the artmaking process. I am revitalized and motivated every time that I do.
I was a longtime hobbyist before starting Monochrome Mythology as a business. Taking on a different variety of subjects enriches the art experience for me and one that I would encourage anyone interested in the arts to try. Exploring that curiosity feels more novel, especially as I grow older. That’s why I love joining up with an art group in Spring Hill, TN whenever I can: 3rd Place Art.
During these groups, trying out new ideas and just having fun drawing among other professionals and non-professionals is what drives us to attend. The prompts provided by our group founder, @jimboya (Jim Elston), are so wacky and unexpected – perfect for breaking up serious portraiture or long narrative work. Chicken Mail (pictured above) is one such example.
How would you portray “Chicken + Mail?” A chicken mailperson or maybe something really different? The same has been true each week and I love seeing the variety. Another one is “Insect + Fixer”:
My mind went to the crime world but I saw plenty of mechanical ants and other bugs repairing things within the art of my fellow participants. Seeing the other possibilities is rewarding.
Any practice is good practice and it’s great to cultivate the art-making journey in order to level up one’s skills. Whether you sew, sculpt, paint, draw, or anything else, don’t forget to take a step back now and again and see what else is out there.
Keep telling stories!
